We are a new group that is here to bring back Maine's history, mainly in Washington County. Right now we are interested in Pembroke and the surrounding areas. We have found many great sites and pieces of history in this area. We recently started a dig in Pembroke on a buried bottle dump from the 1800's and found some great bottles buried under the roots of a spruce tree. Unfortunately, winter caught up with us and we are postponing the dig until spring. For now, we are filling up our notebooks with information on the history of this area.
We hope to keep this blog interesting and fun, and keep you updated on our finds.

ReplyDeleteMost of the glass in the lower pic is early 20th century. My favorite bottle in the bunch is actually the green, ribbed shard towards the left side of the pic. If whole, it may have looked something like these peppersauce bottles:

Thanks! How do you tell the age of the bottles? And yes, it was a nice bottle.
ReplyDeleteyou can tell the age by the length of the line on the side. ABN bottles those made with an automatic bottle machine go to and over the top- after 1900, to the middle of the stem, the neck and 1/2 way up the body all give other date ranges

ReplyDeleteNice to hear, and thanks! Yes we are hating winter to, but this is the time when we hit the history books and look for historic sites on old maps.
